Why is it that something seemingly so simple, is incredibly difficult to get right? Cooking long-grain rice should be as simple as cooking oatmeal, without having to end-up with the same sticky, mush-like consistency. But time and again, the act of cooking perfect rice continues to be a strugglesome task. So, how do restaurants cook fluffy rice? We have the tips so that you don’t have to settle for oatmeal-like-rice ever again.
Follow These 10 Steps For Perfect Rice
1). Measure the rice & put the rice into a cooking pan.
2). Add an inch of water over the top of the rice & stir the water around.
* You’ll notice the water turning murky, as starch lifts from rice.
3). Pour contents into a strainer.
4). Repeat steps 2 & 3, four times.
* Multiple rinses are essential to obtaining non-mushy rice.
5). After the final rinse, return the rice to the pot and add the correct amount of measured water and stir.
* It’s a 1:2 ratio of rice to water.
6). Turn the pan to medium heat (not high heat) and patiently let the water come to a boil.
* Do not continue to stir the pot.
7). Once the water boils, watch closely for the water level to dip below the level of the rice.
* Look for a few mounds of rice peeking out above the waterline.
8). Lay a clean kitchen towel over the top of the pot, then put the lid over the cloth.
* This will absorb the excess moisture.
9). Let the pot rest for 15-20 minutes to allow the moisture to redistribute.
10). Use a fork or a rice paddle to gently mix the rice to obtain the perfect fluffy consistency.
