In times of a pandemic, most of us are concerned with staying healthy & keeping our immune system strong. One of the best ways we can do this is by properly nourishing our bodies. Food is not only delicious but as hypocrites said, "let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." In this blog, we want to highlight garlic, a superfood found in many of our Colorado Spice seasoning blends and is also offered in bulk. Garlic is not only a culinary staple ingredient but has also been shown to have immune-boosting properties that we want to share with you.
Historical UseIn ancient history, garlic was commonly used for its health and medicinal properties. Major civilizations, including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese all documented the medicinal use of this special allium. For example, in ancient Chinese medicine, garlic was prescribed to aid respiration and digestion.
Proven BenefitsToday, scientists understand that the health benefits found in garlic are primarily from sulfur compounds that are created when garlic is crushed or chewed. These sulfur compounds get absorbed through the digestive tract and travel throughout the body, exerting potent biological effects. Incredibly, these compounds have shown to boost the disease-fighting response of some types of white blood cells in the body when they encounter viruses, such as the viruses that cause the common cold or flu. Garlic is also high in important minerals such as iron, phosphorus, manganese, and copper.
Eat More Garlic!
While we are not making any bold medical claims about products, we do enjoy learning and sharing about the health benefits of certain foods like herbs & spices. We recommend trying our Herb and Garlic Pepper Rub on your favorite protein source and add some fresh garlic as well! As an added bonus, since we are all wearing protective face masks in public, nobody will have to smell your garlic breath (except for you!).
